Video: NBN being rolled out in Gungahlin, ACT

Construction of the NBN hit a new milestone this week, with the first NBN fibre optic cable in an established urban area in the ACT being installed.

We were there to capture what it looks like when an NBN fibre is being installed in a suburban street.

Crews hauled the 'distribution cable' -- a high capacity cable with hundreds of fibre optic strands inside -- into an underground duct, where it will run between an exchange in Mitchell to homes and businesses in Gungahlin. The particular pit pictured here was at Haystack Crescent in Palmerston.

As Senator Kate Lundy pointed out at the event, residents of Gungahlin have had a long wait for decent broadband, so it's exciting to see fibre going into the ground.

NBN Co is aiming for the NBN in parts of Gungahlin are to go live by the end of the year. Home and business owners are expected to be able to connect to services over the NBN shortly after, including the main business and shopping precinct.

Construction work has already commenced on rolling out the NBN to around 15,000 homes and businesses in the ACT, including 2,700 premises in parts of Gungahlin, and construction is set to have commenced or be completed for around 135,000 homes and businesses across the Territory by mid-2015.
