Overview
Why was this policy created?
The purpose of this Code of Conduct is to promote a safe, healthy and productive workplace wherever NBN Co operates. A workplace that people are proud to be a part of; where we are held in high regard.
In this Code of Conduct a number of fundamental standards are set out to inform and educate you about NBN Co's expectations of you, and the consequences of engaging in behaviour that is not acceptable.
NBN Co Values
This Code of Conduct is underpinned by the NBN Co values. In particular, Trust and Integrity will be enabled through behaviours that encourage respect. The Code of Conduct provides a framework for Authentic & Collaborative behaviour where workplace issues are addressed openly.
Who does it apply to?
This Code of Conduct applies to all NBN Co employees and their relationships with each other. This also applies to contractors and consultants that work at NBN Co workplaces.
You must be aware of these standards and the conduct required of you as an individual and as a member of work teams.
Contractors are required to adhere to this Code of Conduct, in addition to any other specific requirements provided for in NBN Co supplier contracts.
When does it apply?
This Code of Conduct applies in relation to your employment with NBN Co and will extend beyond your working hours where your behaviour bears on your relationship with other employees in a work-related context or if you are representing NBN Co.
For example, the Code of Conduct applies in the following circumstances:
- The Code of Conduct contains standards of behaviour that are expected at NBN Co.
- The Code of Conduct is based on the principle of respect
- respect for each other and respect for the reputation of NBN Co.
- Employees are expected to be aware of and comply with this policy as well as obligations set out in relevant legislation. An extract of the Code of Conduct can be found below.
- Where breaches of this policy occur, disciplinary action will be taken in accordance with the Managing Performance and Behaviour policy, which in serious cases may include termination of employment.
- This Code of Conduct does not form a part of your contract of employment however a breach of its terms could result in disciplinary action.

- Your behaviour and actions at all times;
- Being aware of and complying with this Code of Conduct, other NBN Co policies, procedures and relevant legislation;
- Treating other NBN Co employees fairly and with respect;
- Acting in the best interests of NBN Co at all times;
- Promptly informing your manager if you believe that the Code of Conduct has not been followed;
- Taking all reasonable steps to secure NBN Co premises and property; and
- Seeking advice from your Manager before undertaking an action or activity that may be contrary to NBN Co policy.
In addition, Managers are responsible for:
- Providing constructive feedback if there are emerging concerns about people adhering to the Code of Conduct;
- Ensuring that each member of their team is aware of and complies with NBN Co policies and procedures;
- Upholding and promoting the Code of Conduct and providing their team with a positive role model;
- Ensuring that all workplace processes and practices comply with relevant policies, procedures and legislation;
- Taking reasonable steps to prevent their team from engaging in conduct contrary to this Code of Conduct;
- Ensuring that each member of their team is familiar with internal avenues for resolving complaints; and
- Dealing with complaints about unacceptable behaviour and misconduct quickly, effectively and confidentially.
Breach of this Code of Conduct
Who do I talk to?
Talk to your manager immediately if you see NBN Co employees acting in breach of this policy. If it is not appropriate to talk to your Manager, contact either your Manager's supervisor or a Human Resource team member.
Designated contact officers will also be available to assist you with dealing with particularly serious cases or where you feel you need additional emotional support. Assistance is also available through NBN Co's employee assistance program.
What sanctions will be imposed?
If you or any other NBN Co employee breaches this Code of Conduct, NBN Co will take action in accordance with Managing Performance and Behaviour policy. This may include disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment in appropriate cases.
If you wish to appeal against disciplinary action taken against you, this will be dealt with in accordance with NBN Co Managing Workplace Grievance policy.
What if someone makes a frivolous complaint?
Making a complaint about a breach of the Code of Conduct is a very serious matter. If you or any other employee makes such a complaint against another employee either maliciously or without reasonable grounds, NBN Co may take appropriate disciplinary action against you.

- Unacceptable personal behaviour, including:
- Verbal or written abuse, physical abuse or assault;
- Discrimination, harassment, bullying or victimisation;
- Threatening or intimidating behaviour towards others;
- Breach of relevant laws and regulations.
- Smoking in the workplace
- Careless behaviour that could endanger the safety of yourself or others.
- Inappropriate use of drugs and alcohol
The Code of Conduct includes how NBN Co will comply with the requirements of legislation covering:
- Discrimination
- Harassment
- Bullying, and
- Victimisation
Respect for NBN Co
In addition to behaviour that impacts on individuals or groups of people there is inappropriate behaviour that impacts on NBN Co and its reputation.Some of the main examples of behaviour covered by this Code of Conduct, that impact on NBN Co, include:
- Inappropriate use of NBN Co resources;
- Damage / theft / fraud;
- Activities adversely affecting NBN Co's or its reputation;
- Second employment and conflicts of interest.
